Uso del artículo THE

 

THE equivalente a: el, la, los, las del español.

The cat  (el gato)                            -                            The window (la ventana)

The cats (los gatos)                         -                       The windows (las ventanas).

 

Se usa para referirse a un sustantivo que ya ha sido referenciado anteriormente en la conversación o el contexto, por eso se trata de algo que ya está definido.

 

           I bought a new house. The house is big.

 

Lo usamos para

 

1- Mencionar nombres de ríos, océanos, mares, cordilleras y otras zonas geográficas:

The Amazon River (El Río Amazonas).

The Swiss Alps (Los Alpes suizos).

 

2- Otros puntos geográficos específicos

“The Equator” (El Ecuador “ojo, no se refiere al país sino a la línea del Ecuador que es considerada la mitad del mundo).

 

“The Middle East” (El Medio Oriente).

 

3- Para mencionar cosas que son únicas en el mundo:

The sun                                                                       The moon

 

Para mencionar décadas:

He was born in the 80´s.

 

4- Con superlativos

Brazil is the biggest country in South America.

 

5- Para nombrar familias por su apellido u otros colectivos.

The Kennedys are the royal family of the United States.

The Spanish enjoy wine after dinner.

 

Evita usar THE en los siguientes casos.

1- Con nombres de lagos:

The Titicaca Lake = INCORRECTO.

Lake Titicaca

 

2- The nunca se usa para mencionar los nombres de idiomas.

The English is better than the Chinese = INCORRECTO.

English is better than Chinese.

 

3- En español solemos usar el artículo “el” para nombrar los días de la semana “el lunes despierto muy temprano.

Sin embargo, nunca uses “The” para mencionar los días de la semana, ejemplo:

The Monday I wake up early = INCORRECTO.

On Mondays I wake up early.

 

4- Nunca uses “the” para mencionar títulos de personas:

The Miss Smith is in the office = INCORRECTO.

Miss Smith is in the office.

 

5- Tampoco uses “the” para nombrar cosas muy generales:

I love the pop music = INCORRECTO.

I love pop music.

 

6- No use “the” con partes del cuerpo:

I blow the nose = INCORRECTO.

I blow my nose.

 

7- El artículo definido “the” no se usa cuando hay posesivo sajón.

 

The George’s car = INCORRECTO.

George’s car.

 

The San Valentine’s day = INCORRECTO.

San Valentine’s day.

 

7- Evíta “the” para mencionar estaciones o momentos del año, ejemplo:

 

In the summer we are going to the beach = INCORRECTO.

In summer we are going to the beach.

 

Practica: si encuentra un error relaciones con el uso o la ausencia de lartículo definido The marque FALSO, si no hay errores con el uso o la ausencia del artículo definido The marque VERDADERO.

 

Miss Osborne called yesterday afternoon. ________

 

I usually bike the Mondays. _________

They love music from the 90's. ___________

I will see her on the  Valentine's Day. _____

 

The Lake Michigan is the second biggest lake in North America. ____________

 

Yesterday I saw a beautiful cat. The cat was yellow. ___________

 

Russia is the biggest country in the world. ___________

 

I love the red color. ____________

 

Irak is in the Middle East. ___________

 

Sarah hurt her knees. __________
